Dr. Rajesh Shah is a distinguished academician with an impressive 42-year teaching career dedicated to the field of Geology. He retired in June 2017 as the head of the Geology Department at M G Science Institute, one of Gujarat’s premier science colleges.
Throughout his extensive career, Dr. Shah imparted knowledge in various branches of geology, including mineralogy, petrology, physical geology, structural geology, hydrogeology, environmental geology, remote sensing, and GIS, to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He played a crucial role in shaping the geologists of the future, guiding 5 students to achieve their Ph.D. degrees while overseeing the dissertation work of over 100 other students.
Dr. Shah’s contributions to the field of geology extend beyond the classroom. He is the author of over 40 research papers published in esteemed journals, including a few international publications. His research has covered a broad spectrum of topics, with a particular focus on important research projects. These projects, sponsored by organizations like SAC, ISRO, PRL, and MoEFCC, have spanned diverse geologic landscapes, ranging from the cryosphere of the Himalayas to the geomorphology of the Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers, the study of ice sheet velocity in Antarctica, and eco-tourism initiatives. Furthermore, Dr. Shah has also actively contributed to projects related to Chandrayaan-1 and Chandrayaan-2 data.
In addition to his academic and research endeavors, Dr. Shah has undertaken various consultancy projects, including hydrogeological studies in several lignite mines operated by GMDC and GIPCL. His expertise has been sought for petrographic analyses of rocks, mineral exploration, and the preparation of comprehensive geological reports.
Dr. Rajesh Shah’s dedication to the field of geology, wealth of experience, and numerous contributions to research and education have left an indelible mark on the discipline, earning him a well-deserved reputation as a stalwart in the geology community.
